Assignment #3 Lantern Slides

This first image seems like it would appeal to a westerner, and depicts everyday life in Japan. The clothing and the store signs make it obviously Japanese, yet the simplicity of the scene expresses typical life.

I chose this image mainly for the aesthetic reasons: the brightly colored flowers, which the eye is first drawn to, then highlight those same colors which are in the women's kimonos.

This image once again combines the idea of an exotic image a westerner would want with the preconstructed notion of what they were looking for. The clothing, hair, and props are clearly Japanese, while the empty room represents the idea of Japan and simplicity.

This image draws the viewer in, with the contrast between the vivid red and then the faded other colors. The lone girl in the kimono seems to give the photo a sense of nostalgia, as she is looking out over the water.

This image I chose for the beauty of it. I liked the reflection of the image in the water, and the way that you can see the bridge in that too. Also, the people standing on the bridge look to be wearing Japanese clothing as well.
